The Los Angeles Lakers are having a rollercoaster of an off-season. After a new beginning in the coaching department, their main priority has been getting a trade for Russell Westbrook. The right opportunity hasn’t come up yet. In addition, the Lakers aren’t willing to give up a lot. However, that has given rise to a much bigger problem. As LeBron James heads into his final year, the four-time MVP hasn’t shown any commitment to signing an extension. And Shannon Sharpe believes it is because the purple and gold aren’t giving the King enough.

The Akron Hammer joined a long list of greatness in 2018 when he made his way to LA. During his first season, he played with a young group and failed to make the postseason. However, LeBron wasted no time to make Los Angeles a championship city once again. In his next season, he paired up with Anthony Davis and won his fourth championship. Unfortunately, not much has happened since. In the last two years, the Lakers have had just one playoff appearance.

The Lakers will have to make some big changes this off-season to ensure they are able to keep the services of LeBron James, at least for another year.

Is this LeBron James’ final season in LA?

Even at the age of 37, the King was arguably a machine. Having one of his best scoring seasons ever, the four-time Finals MVP averaged 30.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. However, his heroics weren’t enough to tackle all the roster problems inside the Lake Show. Now, the Akron Hammer is eligible to sign a massive two-year $97 million extension. But James has faded away so far. During the recent episode of ‘Undisputed‘, James’ biggest supporter, Shannon Sharpe unloaded on the storied franchise.

NFL legend Shannon Sharpe knows the world of sports better than most. And he believes the Lakers need to show the King they are willing to win. The former Denver Broncos tight end said: “I played with what we had. Didn’t make any moves. He played with the kids. He said, ‘I’m done with that.'”

Sharpe went on to say, “This is the only leverage LeBron has. His ability to say ‘Y’all know I’m up after this year right? Y’all do know that right?’. So I believe he will sign the contract only when he believes Rob Pelinka, only when he believes the Lakers have done their due diligence and everything they possibly can to make this a championship contending team”

Heading into the age of 38, the King likely doesn’t have many years left. Likewise, he wants to be winning. And if the Lake Show can’t deliver, James will probably be bidding farewell.

Can the Lakers do anything to keep the Akron Hammer?

LeBron James is arguably still on top of his game and is a difference maker in the league. Hence, the Lakers likely need to trust him in the short time he has left. And the first step is to stop holding back. With the entire Westbrook saga, the franchise needs to be willing to give up picks to bring in the right men.

LeBron James has given the Los Angeles Lakers a championship already. With a healthy Anthony Davis returning next season, this duo could light up the NBA once more. Now, having the best forces around them is the best bet for the purple and gold to add to their trophy case. Moreover, it may be their final chance to have the King keep his flag in Los Angeles.
