There’s little doubt at this point in time that Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is one of the best basketball players ever. His elite shooting prowess sets him apart from his other NBA counterparts. However, he wasn’t always this good.

Going into college, Curry was a three-star recruit and was ignored by many top colleges. For instance, Curry was unable to join Virginia Tech, his father’s college. But Davidson, a private liberal arts school close to Steph’s home in North Carolina, believed in him and trusted his potential.

Interestingly enough, Steph’s coach back in Davidson, Bob McKillop, revealed that he is one of the few people to witness the Dubs guard in action before he became a superstar. In other words, McKillop helped Steph to transform into the brilliant player he is today. However, before this happened, a young Steph Curry wasn’t exactly the spectacle he is today.

In a popular GQ article, McKillop said, “And he was awful. He threw the ball into the stands, he dropped passes, he dribbled off his foot, he missed shots.”

But never once during that game did he blame an official, or point a finger at a teammate. He was always cheering from the bench, he looked in his coaches eyes, and he never flinched. That stuck with me,” he added.

Steph’s ability to stay calm despite the odds against him is something he had developed before college. To this day, he rarely loses his cool on the basketball court, even though he is known for indulging in a lot of trash talk.

Despite all the initial hiccups, Stephen Curry left Davidson as one of their best prospects ever. Steph represented the Davidson Bobcats for three seasons from 2006 to 2009.

Thanks to his achievements and phenomenal play, he was one of the hottest prospects entering the 2009 NBA draft. During these three seasons, he averaged 25.3 points, 3.7 assists, and 4.5 rebounds. Moreover, he was adjudged Southern Player of the Year on two occasions, while making it to the NCAA All-Region team once.

After leaving college, he was drafted by the Golden State Warriors during the 2009 draft as the seventh overall pick. His achievements with the Warriors need no introduction.
