However, a lot of credit for that has to go to his former friend and basketball icon Michael Jordan. Though they both haven’t spoken for 10 years, Charles Barkley has always taken time to credit the Chicago Bulls legend. Speaking about his excitement for the new Michael Jordan movie, the former Phoenix Suns star shared a story about how the six-time NBA champion helped him add to his wealth.

In the latest episode of The Steam Room podcast hosted by Chuck and Ernie Johnson, ‘Air‘ movie director and Academy Award winner Ben Affleck joined the show to throw light on the movie. However, Barkley’s story on MJ’s “genius” advice has caught the attention of the world.

Michael Jordan helped Charles Barkley get richer

Apart from entertaining the audience with his antics on Inside the NBA, Barkley has used the podcast to talk a lot about the unknown side of basketball. The latest episode brought to light His Airness‘ great advice to the 1993 NBA MVP.

Though Barkley and Jordan aren’t on talking terms anymore, the Chicago Bulls legend received praise from his former friend. MJ wasn’t the only basketball star Nike signed during the company’s early days. Barkley signed on along with the six-time NBA champion. However, Michael Jordan’s business advice for Barkley regarding his Nike deal benefitted the Suns’ legend.

Revealing his excitement for ‘Air’, Barkley mentioned, “Michael gave me some great advice one time. We are playing golf one summer and I think at that time I was making about three million dollars a year from Nike. Michael’s always been a great businessman and he says, ‘Why do you need all that money?’. He says, ‘I was looking at your contract. You are making about three million dollars. Tell Nike you want a million and you want the rest in stock options.'”

Further, Barkley spoke about the benefits of MJ’s advice. He mentioned, “I actually probably made 10 times the amount of money because it split… I got those options at $35 and they split over a 100, probably ten times since 1984-85.”
