Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry instantly made an impact when he joined the league in 2009. One of the major reasons why Curry had an edge over the others was his surroundings. The four-time NBA champion belongs to a family consisting of elite athletes. Not only his family members, but even the people who took care of Steph Curry while he was a baby were also elite athletes.
One of his caretakers happened to be NBA veteran Rex Chapman. During a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Chapman divulged hilarious details of his first ‘little buddy’.

Stephen Curry was taken care of by an NBA star
Rex Chapman joined the league in 1988 when he was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in the first round of the draft. This also happened to be the year Stephen Curry was born. On the Dan Patrick Show, Chapman revealed that Dell and Sonya Curry were one of the first people to help him settle down in the city. Interestingly, they brought baby Steph along with them whenever they met Chapman. The future NBA champion was only five months old during that time.
Chapman said, “Stephen was my first little buddy in the NBA. They used to bring him down once a week, go to a movie, drop him off with me, and I would hope he was alive by the time they were back. I was nineteen or twenty.”
Additionally, Chapman revealed that he did everything for his little buddy. From changing diapers to feeding him, the former Phoenix Suns star built a bond through his babysitting.
Curry’s career decision once made Chapman emotional
If it isn’t evident by now, Rex Chapman played a huge role in Stephen Curry’s earlier years. When he was about to choose a college, the Golden State Warriors star really wanted to play for Duke. However, Duke never came calling. That’s when Steph Curry took a huge decision.

“‘Dad, if they didn’t want me then, I don’t want them now, f–k ’em. I’m staying at Davidson.’ I got goosebumps, and I almost started to cry! That’s exactly the answer I hoped I would get!”, said Rex Chapman according to CBS Sports.
The 2022 NBA Finals MVP would go on to choose Davidson College and make history there. Thanks to his exploits in college, the Warriors drafted him as the 7th overall pick in the 2009 draft. Interestingly, Curry graduated from college last year despite being 35 years old!
