A peaceful morning in the capital of Serbia turned into horror on Wednesday. A 13-year-old opened fire on his classmates at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School. Eight children and a school guard have reportedly lost their lives in what is a shocking tragedy. In the wake of the incident, Slovenian NBA star Luka Doncic, who has family roots in the city of Belgrade, has promised to step up and assist in any way possible.

The horrid incident serves as a reminder that the nauseating increase in school shootings is not limited to the United States. The Dallas Mavericks guard took to Instagram to share his prayers and thoughts on the incident. In addition to his prayers, Doncic also made a promise to the people, offering a helping hand.

Luka Doncic offers help following a devastating tragedy

In an effort to help and offer aid, Luka Doncic announced his mission. Speaking to his fans on Instagram, the 24-year-old vowed to help the people of Belgrade. Leading with the ‘Stand with Belgrade’ slogan, the Mavs player has reiterated his commitment to stand with and help those affected.

Talking about the tragedy, Doncic wrote, “I am heartbroken by the tragic school shooting in Serbia and the loss of lives, including those of innocent children. My thoughts are with the families and the entire community affected by this tragedy.”

“Belgrade I support and stand with you all during this difficult time. Through my foundation, I am exploring both immediate and long-term ways to support the students, faculty, and families… I am committed and I will continue to share updates and ways to support as details become available.” promised Doncic to the people of Belgrade.

According to ESPN, his foundation has committed to pay for funeral services and grief counseling for the classmates and staff. Doncic even posted a candle image on his own Instagram to mourn the ones who lost their lives in the devastating incident. Luka Doncic has family ties in Belgrade with several members of his family living in the Serbian capital.
