The Chicago Bulls got knocked out of the playoff race by the Miami Heat on Friday. Although the frustration of losing out on their chances of a championship is heavy, this week could have been worse for their star player DeMar DeRozan. While the Bulls star had a great game against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, his 9-year-old daughter was put in a dangerous spot as she received severe online threats during the game. The six-time NBA All-Star addressed the situation after the loss in Miami.

His daughter, Diar DeRozan, was threatened by some “miserable people.” Because of that, she had to be escorted out to the team bus under high security during their game against the Toronto Raptors. Diar played an important role in the Bulls’ win against the Raptors while sitting courtside. Although DeRozan was eloquent while addressing this unfortunate issue, he guaranteed nothing would ever happen to his little girl while he was around.

DeMar DeRozan addressed the threats against his daughter

The Bulls won the do-or-die game against the Raptors on Wednesday as DeRozan put up an impressive performance. He scored 23 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Despite that, his daughter was the real MVP of the game as her constant distractions possibly played a role in the Raptors’ horrific free throw shooting. However, it was later revealed that his 9-year-old daughter had to be escorted out of the arena under security. Although DeMar said that accompanying her out was more of a precautionary measure, it is still saddening that people are willing to stoop so low against a 9-year-old.

While addressing the issue, DeRozan said, “I was with her. I guarantee you nothing would ever happen when I’m with my daughter.” He said that even though it is frustrating to see such things, he just wants his daughter to be happy. DeRozan said that he wants his daughter to enjoy her time around her father’s teammates.

He added, “I don’t get her caught up in all the negative stuff that comes on the outside.” Talking about the people who issued threats against Diar, he said, “miserable people out there that don’t have a life, honestly. It’s sad.”

Although DeRozan doesn’t seem to be fazed by the threats, this incident could have possibly affected the 33-year-old. Although DeRozan added 26 points against the Heat, he shot only 47% from the field without making a three.

DeRozan’s daughter surely enjoyed her courtside view during the Bulls and Raptors game. She was seen screaming during the game when Raptors center Jakob Poeltl was taking free throws. In fact, Raptors forward Scottie Barnes even said that Diar “did a great job” and might have affected the game’s outcome.

Whether or not Diar contributed to the Bulls’ victory, her father was a happy man in the end because his little girl went viral. DeRozan said, “She went viral” while stating that he didn’t know at first who was screaming so loud.

Although it’s great to see NBA stars’ kids taking the limelight, the online threats are unnecessary. As DeRozan put it, “Some people sit up and use their fingers to make any type of idle threats. It’s miserable.”
