The Spurs have a rich history of drafting elite basketball stars. The last time they had the #1 overall pick, the team drafted Tim Duncan. He went on to have a Hall of Fame career winning multiple titles and accolades with the Spurs.

It seems they will soon have another superstar out of the draft. After it was declared that the Spurs will have the rights to the #1 overall pick, Spurs legend Tony Parker took to Instagram and congratulated the French wonderkid on his story.

He wrote, “Yesss he’s going to the Spurs. Amazing, so proud of you.” Interestingly, he shared an old picture of a young Wembanyama sporting a Spurs jersey. It also happened to be the #9 Spurs jersey which was worn by Parker himself.

Parker is one of Wembanyama’s idols. In fact, the youngster asserted that the Spurs and France have a special connection because of the four-time NBA champion’s legacy. Additionally, Wembanyama also promised to carry on and recreate his legacy. Considering Parker’s history in the NBA, the youngster has a huge task on his hands

He is currently playing for the Metropolitans 92 in France. This season, he averaged 21.6 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game. Although he might be dominating in the French league, the NBA is a different ball game. With all the hype and the expectations on his shoulders, performing at the highest level of basketball will be no easy feat for Wembanyama.
