Humble Joel Embiid Confesses Thinking 76ers Were “Crazy” to Offer Him a $150 Million Extension

When one talks about the best players in the league currently, Joel Embiid simply cannot be ignored. The Philadelphia 76ers are putting up insane numbers every other game and Embiid is in pole position to win the MVP award this season.

Safe to say Embiid is one of the biggest assets of the 76ers. This was further proven after the team offered him a massive contract extension to keep him in the franchise early on in his career. Talking on Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green’s podcast, Embiid gives his thoughts regarding the supermax contract.

Joel Embiid reflects upon his contract

NBA athletes are some of the best-paid players in the world and when someone is one of the best players in the league, he deserves a massive contract. The same happened with Joel Embiid.

The Philadelphia 76ers took a risk by signing a highly talented player who is injury prone. It is safe to say the risk turned out well as Embiid is playing phenomenally, week in and week out.

Talking on the Draymond Green podcast, Embiid talked about the contract. Draymond Green initiated the talk by mentioning how Embiid wasted his first three years, and the team decided to believe in him by giving him a five-year extension.

Embiid replies, “I was like, ‘what are you talking about?’ I haven’t played basketball, I can’t play 31 games in 3 years. I never believed in myself. He[Embiid’s agent] started going about all these over the details in the contract. I don’t care, how much is guaranteed? I’m signing whatever because this is insane! They giving me a $150 million after playing 31 games! I was like ‘they gotta be crazy’.“

Despite not having the best starts to his career in the NBA, Joel Embiid has turned his fortunes around miraculously. He has quickly turned into one of the best players in the league and is looking towards the MVP award and the NBA title this season.

How has Embiid played this season?

The Philadelphia 76ers are 3rd in their conference, and Embiid has played a crucial role. He is averaging an insane 29.9 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists this season. Moreover, he is in the race for the MVP award, and the scoring title.

He has the highest points average in the league, and is currently the second in the MVP ranking behind previous winner Nikola Jokic.
