NBA legends such as Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Scottie Pippen, and Bulls Head Coach Phil Jackson were among the few personalities who walked the fans through MJ’s journey to stardom. During his prime years, His Airness had become one of the first choices for endorsements. Such was his popularity that every high-end brand wanted to sponsor him for brand representation.

After Jordan went off to college, his skills improved and so did his confidence. Additionally, Jordan’s competitive nature also grew more and more. Basketball coach Roy Williams said that Jordan did not speak to him for 24 hours after he defeated MJ in a game of pool. Furthermore, Mitch Albom recalled the time MJ was on a bus with his teammates. Apparently, the players were comparing their popularity among themselves. One of them said that MJ was not popular enough to be able to get in touch with $180 million worth Janet Jackson.

“Finally somebody said something like, ‘ I bet even Michael can’t get a hold of Janet Jackson’. He took out a cell phone, dial up, said ‘Is Janet there? Just tell her it’s MJ’. Two seconds later, Janet Jackson was on the phone,” said Albom.
