“I Did Not Name the Street After Myself”: Humble Charles Barkley, Who Donated $1,000,000 for His Hometown, Still Refuses to Believe Grand Gesture

Charles Barkley has completed over four decades in basketball circles. From his days at Auburn University to his comfortable chair in the studios of Inside the NBA, Barkley has truly experienced a magical journey from the streets of Leeds, Alabama. However, at the age of 60, the Philadelphia 76ers legend still has a connection to his roots back in his hometown and by the looks of it, his feelings are reciprocated. Despite the many philanthropic endeavors of the 11-time All-Star, he still hasn’t been able to grasp the love he gets all over the world.

Charles Barkley has been a household name even twenty years after his retirement. The 76ers legend’s hilarious antics on the hit show Inside the NBA have garnered him a lot of adulation over the years. However, the 60-year-old has been really surprised by the amount of love he receives from his hometown, as he recently revealed in an enthralling interview.

Despite the lack of a Championship ring, the Hall Of Famer has garnered a lot of respect in NBA circles. However, it might pale in comparison to the respect he has been awarded from his hometown Leeds.

The boy from Alabama expressed how he had nothing to do with the surprising honor that his hometown bestowed upon him. In his recent appearance on 60 Minutes, Jon Wertheim sat with Barkley, while the latter talked about a street named after him, Charles Barkley Avenue.

I’m tellin’ y’all, I did not name the street after myself,” said Barkley. Furthermore, when questioned about if he had to do anything with lobbying for the street being named after him, he replied with all honesty, ” I did not lobby for Charles Barkley Avenue.

The duo were walking around in Barkley’s neighborhood as the 11-time All-Star introduced Wertheim to his childhood. Additionally, Wertheim also noted that even after years of fame, Barkley still owned a house in the area.

While Chuckster might be modest enough to not preach his achievements as a reason for such an honor, many remember his contributions a little bit differently. The 11-time All-Star never came from money, yet his selfless behavior when helping people truly left a mark.

Barkley’s massive contribution to a college in Alabama

Back in 2020, the former Auburn University student decided to make a major donation of $1 Million to Miles College in Alabama. The 76ers legend’s reasons for such a donation stemmed from his wish to help the historically black college, who were gearing to have a female President at the time.

It wasn’t the first time that Barkley made such a donation, as the same amount was donated to two colleges each, namely, Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, and Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta. He additionally pledged another $1 Million to Morehouse College in Atlanta in 2017.
