A popular narrative around Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green is that he is successful because of his situation. The situation being he plays with the likes of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and the rest of the Warriors crew. Actor Rome Flynn brought up this narrative during the latest episode of the ‘Throwing Bones’ show.

During the show, Flynn asked the four-time NBA champion, “Do you feel like, if you have been drafted somewhere else or went to a different organization that you still be successful?” While answering the  question, Draymond Green ended up taking a dig at his own team.

The Golden State Warriors picked Draymond Green in the 2012 NBA Drafts. At that time, the Warriors were in the process of building a roster that would help them in the long run. Around the same time, the Los Angeles Lakers had a star-studded lineup and were making the playoffs regularly. Green was quick to point this out while giving a fitting reply to his doubters.

Draymond Green on the Warriors being ‘duds’

In response to Flynn’s question, Draymond Green elaborated that people talk about his success as though he had been drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers. The four-time NBA All-Star said, “People saying oh you wouldn’t have been this or you wouldn’t have been that, as if I went to the Lakers. I went to the Warriors, they were duds yeah.”

When the likes of Draymond Green and Klay Thompson were drafted, the Golden State Warriors were a struggling organization. As Green pointed out, the team was barely winning and the fans were absent from the arena. The core group of the Dubs, which included Draymond, Steph and Klay, build the current dynasty from the ground up.

Juan Toscano-Anderson, an Oakland native, who was also featured on the show, recalled that the organization was selling tickets for free to lure the fans into the arena. This was their reality. The team was rebuilding. So when Green entered this roster, he had a specific position to fill in. The position was to be himself, i.e, to be the vocal leader who could lead the defense and play tough.

Green further stated that he would’ve been successful at any organization irrespective of their situation. However, Toscano-Anderson pushed back against the Dubs veteran’s ‘duds’ comment. He felt the need to defend his former team from the 32-year-old forward’s accusations.

Green believed that he has lived up to the expectations put on him. The contributions from the former Defensive Player of the Year resulted in four championship titles in 8 years for the West Coast side.
