“I Don’t Hang With Athletes. Hanging With Michael Jordan Is Supposed to Be Big News?”: NBA Legend Dennis Rodman Seemed off on His Friendship With MJ in 1997

Dennis Rodman has played for some of the top NBA franchises in his career. In his 14-year-old career, he has played for the Detroit Pistons, the San Antonio Spurs, the Chicago Bulls, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Dallas Mavericks. He won five NBA championships, two with the Bad Boys Pistons and three alongside Michael Jordan and the Bulls. Rodman got the opportunity to play alongside some of the NBA’s greatest players, and he even managed to befriend some of them. However, Rodman once admitted that he didn’t hang out with athletes in the NBA during his career.
Dennis Rodman joined the Bulls ahead of the 1995-96 season. Subsequently, he proceeded to win a three-peat with the Bulls alongside Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. Rodman had incredible chemistry with Jordan and Pippen on the court but didn’t have a close relationship with them off the court. However, Jordan and Rodman met each other at the 2022 NBA Top 75 event earlier this year. The two hugged as Jordan asked Rodman to hang out with him sometime.

It was a breath of fresh air for NBA fans to find out that Jordan and Rodman are friends. However, during an old interview from his Bulls days, Rodman admitted that he doesn’t hang out with NBA athletes.
Dennis Rodman once discussed hanging out with Michael Jordan
Former NBA star Dennis Rodman gave an interview to Kevin Cook of Playboy magazine in 1997. ‘The Worm’ had just helped the Bulls reach its 2nd consecutive NBA Finals which was discussed extensively during the interview. He was also asked about his friendship with Michael Jordan. To this, he replied that he doesn’t ‘hang out with athletes’.
“I told you I don’t give a f**k about anybody in the NBA,” Rodman told Playboy magazine. “I don’t hang with athletes. Hanging with Michael Jordan is supposed to be big news? Please.”

Rodman went on to win his fourth NBA championship later that year. Michael Jordan was named the NBA Finals MVP, while Rodman ended the season as the rebounding champion.
Despite not being friends off the court, Rodman and Jordan made it work on the court. The two, along with Scottie Pippen were so good that the Bulls were almost unstoppable. Many feel that signing the best players doesn’t win championships in reference to the Lakers‘ disastrous last season. But Phil Jackson and his Bulls side made it work in the 90s.
