Graham Bensinger asked Dirk Nowitzki to share the best times he had with the Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban. Bensinger then specifically asked about the time he and Cuban went to the birthday party of former teammate Juwan Howard.

“I don’t necessarily remember that night as vivid as he does. I think there was more of a bad experience for him but uh…we had a good time,” said Nowitzki.

Dirk Nowitzki shares his first impression of Mavs owner Mark Cuban

In the interview, Dirk Nowitzki talked about his relationship with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. The tech billionaire bought the NBA team in January 2000. Cuban became the major stakeholder of the Mavs by investing $285 million. However, it might be surprising to know that his decision to buy the Mavs had nothing to do with business. In fact, Cuban wanted to own the Mavs because he was a huge fan and felt that he could do better with the team. When he acquired the Mavs, Nowitzki was in his second season with the team, having joined in 1998. Post his retirement in 2019, Nowitzki became a special advisor for the Mavs.

Bensinger asked Nowitzki how he felt about Cuban when he became the new owner of the team. The 12x All Star said that at first they were uncertain of Cuban but gradually they saw how invested Cuban was in the franchise. The Mavs icon further stated that Cuban actually bought positive changes to the team.

“He basically turned this franchise around and put it on back on the map,” said Nowitzki about Cuban. Incidentally, Mark Cuban’s Mavs won the 2011 NBA championship against all odds, under the sturdy leadership of Dirk Nowitzki. Moreover, the 7′ German was declared the MVP of the NBA Finals for his historic showing against the Miami Heat.
