While nothing is ever certain in the NBA, next year’s number one overall draft pick just might be. The way young sensation Victor Wembanyama has been playing, any and every team would want to get their hands on him. And it would be shocking to see another player get drafted with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft ahead of him. In recent news, Victor Wembanyama made his debut in the FIBA World Cup with the senior French national team.
France went up against Lithuania and all eyes were on the 18-year-old wonderkid. France came out on top with a final score of 90-65. In the 23 minutes he played, Wembanyama scored 20 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal while shooting 6/13 from the field. Wembanyama managed to have an excellent outing, considering this was his debut game.

Victor Wembanyama already drawing comparisons
The hype around Victor Wembanyama is as real as it gets. Fans, analysts, and even current players in the NBA have taken notice of the 18-year-old giant. Almost every player that took notice of the 7’4″ center was all praise about him. And they also predicted that he will be a problem once he comes into the league.
Wembanyama has already drawn comparisons to many elite players in the NBA. However, he does not like to be compared. He said, “I want to be myself, create my character. I would like to become unguardable one day. A player capable of adapting to all situations, versatile, on both ends of the floor.”

Both players are listed above 6’9″ but play like guards. The speed, versatility, and poise these two players boast can be considered the epitome of grace for a big man. While talking about Antetokounmpo and Durant, Wembanyama said, “I try to steal some things from them, to apply them in games.”

Another player he looked up to the most is Kobe Bryant. The French national voiced his admiration for Bryant’s ‘Mamba Mentality’ and his work ethic. “I admire his spirit, work ethic, and game philosophy. Following his example every day, I try to push my limits. When I suffer, when I have doubts, I often wonder what Kobe would have done. And I know I would have done more,” Wembanyama said.
