“I Want My Daughter Looking Up to Her”: Brittney Griner Was Attaining Superstar Status in USA and China Before Her Detention in Russia

WNBA star Brittney Griner is the focus of all media headlines at the moment. However, it is not the first time that she is facing such a situation. Griner has been a star since her college days, thanks to her exploits both on and off the basketball court.

Griner is not someone to hide her sexuality and her private life. Needless to say, this decision has garnered a lot of hate and also support from all around the world.

Before her infamous arrest in Russia for carrying illegal substances in her luggage, Griner was more than a basketball icon. She was a role model to countless fans who looked up to her.

During an interview, the Phoenix Mercury star revealed what it feels like to be such a huge star. According to her, she has really noticed an uptick in people knowing her. Moreover, a season ticket holder of the Phoenix Mercury revealed that she wants her daughter to look up to Griner.

Terri Thomas, the season ticket holder said, “I want my daughter looking up to her.” This is not all. Her eight-year-old child also revealed her admiration for the basketball star. She said, “She’s my hero because she’s confident with who she is.

Keeping aside her controversies off-court, Brittney Griner is one of the best women’s basketball players in the world. In fact, she helped lead the Phoenix Mercury squad to the 2014 WNBA champions. Before that, she had also led the Baylor Lady Bears to an NCAA championship in 2012.

After months of legal proceedings, Brittney Griner was sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison for drug trafficking charges.

She was arrested on 7th February 2022 and her detention hit the 200-day mark recently. Although there have been attempts to free her, it is not that simple.

The Governments of both countries are reportedly negotiating a prisoner swap deal that will allow Griner to return back to the United States of America. With officials still yet to find a solution for Griner, the WNBA star currently faces her detention in Russia.
