The career of Magic Johnson is reflected in his nickname “Magic”. But his personal life went through a lot of judgment and public scrutiny over the years, something which nobody would want in their lives. But that comes hand-in-hand when you’re one of the best Los Angeles Lakers players to ever do it. Even Magic’s lovely marriage has suffered sometimes due to his fame and some of his questionable decisions. However, Cookie Johnson doesn’t let her husband get away with things easily if she finds his actions unacceptable like she once did when Johnson wasn’t happy with his son’s life choices.

EJ Johnson, Magic Johnson’s son came out as gay to his parents when he was around 15. His father wasn’t pleased with the fact initially, which angered his wife Earlitha Cookie Johnson, leading to a tough few days in the family.

Cookie Johnson got pretty angry when Magic refused to accept his son’s sexual preferences

Back in 2016, when Cookie was promoting her memoir ‘Believing in Magic’, she was interviewed by her son EJ Johnson. EJ and his mom discussed the time when he came out of the closet to his parents. EJ asked his mom what her reaction was when the Lakers legend wasn’t particularly happy with the news.

“I was very angry with him when he did that,” said Cookie. She further added, “And I told him so that night because, you know, this is who you are and there was no reason to make you feel bad about it.“

EJ revealed that Johnson and EJ talked about it later on and the former apologized for not being understanding before. The 30-year-old continued his line of questioning question as he asked what his mother felt about that interaction. 

“I cried, because you know it was the most amazing thing. He was the last piece and now you know you can be free to be who you were,” revealed Cookie.

Magic Johnson was a Lakers superstar in the ’80s. Safe to say, he’s not part of the newer generation. But Cookie Johnson didn’t find that reason acceptable for him to not gladly welcome their son’s choices in life.

The difficult but strong relationship between Magic and Cookie

Magic and Cookie have known each other since they studied at Michigan State University. Since then, they have had an on-and-off relationship. In her memoir, Cookie revealed how Johnson proposed to her in 86′ but ended up having cold feet, which eventually broke off the relationship.
