“If It Was LeBron James or Stephen Curry…”: WNBA Star Scrutinizes US Government for Bias in Treatment of Brittney Griner’s Russian Detention Case

Over the past five months, the WNBA world has been waiting for the return of its biggest stars. Brittney Griner has been stuck in a Russian prison since her detention in February. The league has joined hands in doing its best to spread the message for justice and demand that Griner is brought home safely. The entire basketball world is behind her. However, some of the WNBA stars believe it would be a much different case for an NBA professional.
Recently, a Dallas Wings star blasted the US government for not treating Griner’s case with equal importance. And she believes that had a high-profile NBA name like LeBron James or Stephen Curry found themselves in such a predicament, then the whole situation would have been treated differently.
Brittney Griner is widely considered one of the best players in the history of the WNBA. However, a huge part of her impact comes outside the floor. The Phoenix Mercury star has substantially contributed to helping society. From raising money during Hurricane Harvey and even providing shoes for the homeless, she has always put her best foot forward. Hence, with the government holding back its efforts, several WNBA stars are furious.

Dallas’ Arike Ogunbowale spoke out on the matter and said women are still fighting for an equal place. However, her stand on Stephen Curry and LeBron James may alert US officials to take action.
Brittney Griner not given equal importance as Stephen Curry and LeBron James?
Griner’s detention has lasted for well over 100 days now. The eight-time All-Star is away from her close ones, all alone in a foreign state. At such a time, players like Ogunbowale and other stars expected the US government to take quick action. However, as time continues to pass by, anger has set in. And Ogunbowale threw the bias claims on the officials.

With the government still not making any progress, Ogunbowale believes it’s still a case of inequality. According to her, women need to fight even to push the case of Griner being stuck in Russia. She said: “This shows how women are fighting for equality and we still have to fight even when it’s an American stuck in a Russian jail. If this is LeBron James or Steph Curry, they’d be home.”
