LeBron James has established himself as a global superstar owing to his basketball abilities and exploits on the court. However, even before stepping foot in the NBA, he was a big name throughout his high school years. His journey to become ‘The King’ has been nothing short of breathtaking for fans to witness. Prior to that, James was just a “kid” from Akron, Ohio who was renowned throughout the nation as ‘The Chosen One’.

His talents swiftly drove him into the limelight, and the basketball landscape was irrevocably altered. He ushered in a revolution that forever changed the way high school athletes are viewed, recruited, and marketed.

James became a household name as a byproduct of his NBA-ready talents in high school. He quickly understood, however, that the thing that provided him with an escape from reality also had a business side to it.

He learned as a teenager that the NCAA and other organizations were profiteering off his fame and skill set. The four-time champion once got candid regarding this and how, as a youngster, he realized it was all a business.

The widespread publicity was embraced by many players. However, this transpired without any financial remuneration, which was strongly condemned. Talking on ‘The Boardroom‘, LeBron James opened up about how the NCAA and other entities benefited from his name and skills.

“Freshman year to my sophomore year they moved our home games to the (University of Akron)… my first home game of my sophomore year was at the University of Akron and there like 6,000 people… and they sell season tickets,” said the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.

He then noted how, as a teenager, he quickly got accustomed to the fact that it was all a business.

“Right then and there as a sophomore at 15 I knew that this was a business,” James concluded.

Maverick Carter, a close friend, and long-time business partner of James’, also once revealed that his games as a senior were offered to purchase via pay-per-view. He claimed that anyone in the state of Ohio could watch his games if they paid ten bucks.

It’s reasonable to assume that the spotlight on James seemed brighter than any teenager had ever experienced. Regardless, he did not buckle under the pressure and has carved out a legendary career for himself.

His successes on and off the court have garnered him a fortune. In fact, the 37-year-old is the first active NBA player to become a billionaire, having accomplished this extraordinary feat in June.
