Brittney Griner has always been open about her sexuality. Ever since her high school days, Griner would always keep herself open regardless of the criticism from others. Her family and friends all knew about her and even her teammates. But when she went to college at Baylor, she was asked to keep it under wraps by none other than her head coach and supporting staff.
Brittney Griner admitted her coach asked her not open up publicly
Griner went to play at Baylor and she was a fantastic player. She broke multiple records at the NCAA level and in her third season, Baylor went 40-0. All in all, she had one of the greatest careers as a basketball player.
But when she was recruited, the staff and head coach did not want her be open about herself. Especially about her sexuality. Griner added, “I told Coach when she was recruiting me. I was like, ‘I’m gay. I hope that’s not a problem,’ and she told me that it wasn’t. I mean, my teammates knew, obviously they all knew. Everybody knew about it.”

Griner adds that this was like an unwritten law at the university. And they did not want the players’ private lives to be so open. Despite this, all of her teammates knew and they were very comfortable with it. And Griner did not cause an issue for recruitment when she was there. But it may not have been wise to tell a player to keep it under wraps. And the university came under a lot of stick for doing that.
