“I’m Not the Only Female That Wears Men’s Clothes, So I’m Not One in a Million.”: Brittney Griner Once Sounded Off on Nike’s Ad Campaign Singling Her Out As a “Pioneer”

Brittney Griner once addressed Nike vaunting her unorthodox fashion choices in an interview. In fact, she expressed her appreciation for the brand getting behind her unconventional outfits and commended her for breaking stereotypes for women by dressing in menswear. In addition, Brittney Griner also revealed the struggles she had to face in her early years for not conforming to traditional gender norms.

In the interview with Mother Jones, Griner broke down her fashion choices and how they have evolved over the years. Afterward, she also opened up in detail about her choice of wearing men’s clothing as a woman.

Brittney Griner addresses Nike applauding her for breaking stereotypes

During the interview, Brittney Griner sounded off on Nike acclaiming her bold fashion choices. A Nike spokesperson released a statement to ESPN that read, “It’s safe to say we jumped at the opportunity to work with her because she breaks the mold.”

In response, Griner seemed grateful for the comment. “For a company like Nike to say that I’m breaking the mold! I was extremely happy,” said the WNBA star.

The Phoenix Mercury star also expressed the desire to frame the quote on a wall. Because she has not always received applause for her choices in clothing. However, Griner is aware of the fact that she is not the first woman to rock menswear.

But she admits her role in normalizing such attire for a large section of women.

Griner’s struggles with clothing

Since childhood, Griner had been upbraided for not conforming to gender norms. In fact, she remembers always being uncomfortable with wearing ‘girly’ clothes.

At her high school graduation, the 2014 WNBA champion wore a dress. Subsequently, she felt very uncomfortable and embarrassed in front of everyone. Since then, she has never reverted to such clothes.

As it turns out, Nike has fully supported the eight-time WNBA All-Star’s choice of wearing solely men’s brands. In fact, they are hopeful that Griner’s example would open doors for more women who are comfortable in menswear.

During the interview, Griner also talked about the evolution of her fashion choices. Earlier, she used to wear “older-boyish”, baggy, and sagging clothes. Now she prefers tighter fittings as per the latest trends.
