NBA legend Michael Jordan took the league by storm as soon as he joined the Chicago Bulls. Ever since his rookie season, he has been averaging mind-boggling numbers, and the fans loved him. However, there was one thing Jordan wanted more than anything, the NBA title. He knew he needs to win championships to be remembered as a legend of the game. Despite his huge individual success, he could not win a ring initially. He struggled to carry the team as a lone superstar.

The Chicago Bulls drafted Scottie Pippen in 1987 but he needed time to develop to provide support to MJ. At the time, basketball legend Phil Jackson was an assistant coach for the Bulls. He already had 2 titles to his name during his playing time with the New York Knicks. He was then promoted as the head coach of the Bulls in 1989.
Jackson equipped the triangle offense which essentially revolutionized the way the Bulls played. And the league could not identify a way to stop it. This also helped the team to share the scoring load with Jordan which in turn helped him do his thing.
Some of the training methods were new for Michael Jordan and the team
Phil Jackson had a very unique philosophical outlook as a coach and he did things very differently than most of the other coaches. Michael Jordan once talked about Jackson’s way of coaching during an interview. He disclosed one of the things Jackson would ask the team to do. MJ said Jackson used to ask the team to sit in a dark room and think about what each individual is going to do for the day and how it is going to help the team. However, it was a bit different for them when they first started doing it.

“And when he first got here, I felt like, here we are 12 guys in a room of darkness sitting up straight and we are supposed to have our eyes closed. And everybody’s like this, looking around like, ‘Is everybody doing this?’,” Jordan said.
Jackson had a huge belief in mindfulness and he added it to his team’s routine wherever he coached.

Jordan was already a great individual player but Jackson helped him become a great leader. He also helped raise the quality of the team. Two years after becoming the head coach of the Bulls, he delivered their first-ever championship in 1991. Jackson and MJ went on to win six rings in total.
Jackson then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers and led them to their first three-peat. He then helped them win two more titles. In total, Phil Jackson has an unbelievable 13 titles, 11 as a coach and 2 as a player.
