“Is This Really You?”: Wife Cherelle Admits Bizarre First Meeting With Brittney Griner After 9 Months

Cherelle Griner played a pivotal role in bringing her wife Brittney Griner home after the WNBA star’s detainment in Russia in February. She took some enormous steps to make sure that the people of America did not forget Griner. While Griner faced troubles in Russia, Cherelle Griner struggled at home longing for her wife. Recently, Cherelle Griner made an admission about her strange first meeting with Brittney Griner after over nine months.

Cherelle Griner recently shared her experience and feelings upon meeting Griner at the San Antonio army base in Texas. Griner landed in Texas after being traded in the UAE in exchange for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout on December 8. Griner’s wife recently gave an insight into her emotions after seeing the 2014 WNBA champ for the first time in months.

In a recent interview with People, Cherelle Griner shared that she felt like somebody had just punched her in the stomach and she inhaled, after hearing the shocking news about Brittney Griner’s detention at the Moscow Airport in February. Moreover, the Baylor alumnus added, “You never get to breathe out.” She could finally exhale when Griner was freed from Russia.

Further, Cherelle Griner stated that she tried to stay grounded and make efforts to free her wife. She confessed to feeling hopeless for a lot of days. However, Cherelle Griner reckoned, “Still, I would never completely give up hope on my wife’s life.”

During her interview, Cherelle revealed that she and Griner instantly had tears in their eyes when they saw each other through a plane window after nearly ten months. Upon landing, medical personnel checked Griner on the plane before she was allowed to leave. However, Cherelle Griner felt that like the process took forever due to her eagerness to hold Griner.

Further, Cherelle Griner stated, “I couldn’t stop touching her face. I was like, ‘Is that really you?’ It did not feel real. It was chilling-warm. I was just holding on tight. I couldn’t let go.”

Cherelle was extremely emotional when she first saw Griner. Griner’s deteriorated health due to months of toiling in Russia and the absence of the WNBA stars’ dreadlocks gave her wife a strange feeling upon seeing her for the first time.

Cherelle Griner has been the biggest advocate and promoter of her wife Brittney Griner’s release. She made valiant efforts to let the world know about BG’s struggles in Russia. BG’s wife made constant public appearances to speak up about Griner.

Moreover, Cherelle Griner met with President Joe Biden a few months ago, who gave her assurance about Griner’s situation. She was also present at the White House when President Bident announced Griner’s return.

Meanwhile, she also launched the #WeAreBG campaign in association with the WNBA to bring attention to Griner’s detention on social media. Cherelle Griner contributed massively to the release of Brittney Griner in terms of keeping her from being forgotten. Thus, she felt emotional and peculiar during her meeting with her wife as her efforts finally paid off.
