The Brooklyn Net guard Kyrie Irving has received a lot of flak for ‘promoting’ a supposedly antisemitic film in a social media post on October 27. The team eventually handed the seven-time All-Star a five-match ban for failing to take a stand against antisemitism. Recently, a renowned Israeli politician Gilad Erdan took a dig at Irving by praising the Brooklyn Nets for their decision to ban the 2016 NBA champ.

Kyrie Irving tweeted the link to a 2018 controversial movie on his social media. The movie is believed to be inspired by a supposedly antisemitic book that questions the history of the Jewish community.

Following the post, several media outlets reported the film’s antisemitic message and criticized Kyrie Irving for spreading hate. The Nets guard deleted the post a few days later but refused to back down from his beliefs. However, he eventually took responsibility for the negative impact of his post on the Jewish community and pledged to donate $500,000 to anti-hate causes.

Following his take on the question of having anti-semitic beliefs, the Nets banned Irving for at least five games. The NBA team claimed that the NBA star was ‘unfit to be associated’ with the team.

Israeli politician applauds Brooklyn Nets for Kyrie Irving ban

Recently, Gilad Erdan commended the Nets for showing no tolerance to hate in his Twitter post. Erdan is a Permanent Representative of Israel in the United Nations since 2020. He reckoned that one cannot ‘pick and choose’ to stand against unjust practices as per their benefits.

Further, Gilad Erdan wrote“Kyrie hopped on the trend of being antisemitic & was put in his place quickly. I hope he opens  his eyes beyond the conspiracy theories he spreads & can educate himself.”

The Israeli politician seemed to be impressed by the swift decision made by the Brooklyn Nets. He also hoped that Irving would realize and learn the truth behind the conspiracy theories. Erdan also mentioned the anti-semitic trend that was started by popular rapper Kanye West’s hateful comments against the Jewish people.

When will Irving return to the Nets?

The Nets banned Kyrie Irving for a minimum of five games. He is likely to be eligible to return for the team’s games against the Los Angeles Lakers on November 13. Irving has remained silent since his public apology.

Moreover, the Nets general manager suggested that Irving’s apology was in the right direction but certainly not enough. Thus, the Nets could extend the ban or recall Kyrie Irving, depending on the discussions between the team leaders and management.
