“It Cost Me Millions of Dollars”: Scottie Pippen Despised Michael Jordan for Laying Bare His Biggest Insecurity

Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan will forever be remembered as a part of basketball history. They held the NBA world by the scruff of its neck as the Chicago Bulls dominated the 1990s. The NBA reached unsurmountable heights all over the world during that time. However, the primary characters in the rise of the Bulls still have a few things to sort out between them, 30 years later.

In 2021, Pippen revealed all about his time with the Bulls through his autobiography. Giving fans a different side of what they had known from ‘The Last Dance.’ He also expressed his frustration with the documentary and Jordan.

Scottie Pippen is not a fan of the Michael Jordan documentary

Scottie Pippen was an integral part of the era of the Chicago Bulls. He and Michael Jordan carried the legacy as they broke through the Detroit Pistons in 1991. Going on to win the first championship in franchise history. The duo was on the losing side for a long time and helped the turnover that came in the 90s.

Naturally, the important players on the roster felt like they deserved huge contracts. That was the case with Pippen as well. However, the six-time champion signed a five-year $18 million contract. This just felt wrong to him and the world. According to him, he signed the deal because he needed the money and he couldn’t risk his career earnings to an injury.

The NBA legend came out in his book ‘Unguarded’ where he explained that Jordan’s documentary let out a very vulnerable side of him. Moreover, he isn’t a fan of many things that were in the final cut of the documentary.

The ESPN documentary made me seem naïve given how much more money players would eventually earn under the revised collective bargaining agreement with the owners,” stated Pippen.

The Bulls legend further explained how his life completely changed because of the contract. “It cost me millions of dollars and had a negative effect on my relationship with Jerry Reinsdorf and Jerry Krause for the rest of my time in Chicago,” wrote Pippen.

After their sixth championship, the whole squad was dismantled. Jordan decided to take his second retirement in 1999. Pippen wanted to renegotiate his contract post the win, and when the Bulls declined his wishes, he signed with the Houston Rockets for $67 million. Finally getting the big contract he deserved.
