The Brittney Griner fiasco doesn’t seem to be getting any better. As the U.S. government uses every tool at its disposal, both Russia nor the States seem to be converging to an agreement. Griner is currently set to serve her nine-year prison sentence at the IK-2 penal colony in Mordovia. The U.S. government, however, is trying to negotiate a prisoner exchange.

Political sports writer Dave Zirin recently gave his take on the grim situation. Zirin appeared in an interview with MSNBC and was in conversation with TV host Joy Reid. The two shared their concerns over the Phoenix Mercury star and the notoriously inhumane conditions of the Russian penal colony, located deep into the taiga.

Dave Zirin gives a harsh reality check

Zirin voiced his displeasure at how the nation as a whole is not able to come together to bring Brittney Griner home. Joy Reid further brought up the fact that Moscow may be watching the American public, who wait with bated breaths.

Zirin also mentioned the Russian president Vladimir Putin, who is renowned for indulging in ‘culture wars’. According to the sports writer, the Russian president was keenly studying the domestic politics of the US before making a decision.

He went on to say, “I really do think that it diminishes us as a country if we just fold our arms while she suffers.”  Zirin, earlier in March, had tweeted “Brittney Griner is a political prisoner. If you don’t see that, then you don’t see how serious this situation has become.”

Zirin had also extensively covered the Colin Kaepernick situation. ‘The Kaepernick Effect: Taking a Knee, Changing the World,’ was his 11th outing as a writer. The book covered Kaepernick’s decision to take a knee during the national anthem. The football quarterback had since been blackballed from playing in the NFL. Only because he chose to take a stand against something he felt was wrong. Zirin too had made clear that the Kaepernick era was just the beginning of a larger movement. For now, let’s hope that the two countries can find a middle ground to bring the WNBA star home.
