Stephen Curry is now the talk of the town in the NBA world and the Hot Docs Film Festival as well. While the Golden State Warriors superstar ran riot with 50 points and ousted the Sacramento Kings in Game 7, the biographical documentary titled Stephen Curry: Underrated was screened at the Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto. Fans will have to wait till July to watch the much-anticipated Apple TV+ and A24 documentary on their devices. However, the director’s recent revelations on the project prove that it is worth the wait.

Stephen Curry has undoubtedly become one of the greatest and most successful players in NBA history. However, Stephen Curry: Underrated director and producer Peter Nicks had discovered that the game’s greatest shooter had an underdog story to tell.

Stephen Curry had approached Peter Nicks himself and told him that he was willing to shed light on his coming-of-age story. Nicks had surprisingly learnt that the 4x-NBA champion was often overlooked as a young baller.

Given his small and slender physique, Curry’s prospects as a basketball player were always put in a dubious light by his peers. Therefore, the 2x-MVP had to wear the colors of the Davidson Wildcats, who were NCAA underdogs, compared to heavyweights like Alabama, UConn, Kentucky, and other big schools.

However, for these lesser-known stories of Steph’s life to stand out, the director had to juxtapose Curry’s struggles with his phenomenal success. And, that was when Steph Curry seized his fourth NBA ring in 2022.

“As we were putting together the narrative for his time at Davidson, in that run in 2008 and into the NCAA tournament, we started to realize that things were starting to click with the Warriors. We started thinking about this parallel narrative. Once they finally did win the championship, we really got to work in the edit to try to piece together that narrative,” said Peter Nicks in an interview with Yahoo news.

“That device that you see at the end, where we sort of flip back and forth between his time at Davidson and his time today…it really kind of gave me chills because it really encapsulated his journey,” he added.

Peter Nicks has therefore gained an insight to create a parallel narrative from the stark contrast between Curry’s NCAA days and his illustrious NBA stint.

The upcoming documentary on Stephen Curry largely revolves around his days with the Davidson college team. Apart from his physique, his debut too had put Steph’s basketball career in dubious light. Stephen Curry had a 13-turnover debut with the Davidson Wildcats. The entire coaching staff wondered what they will do with the debutant. However, the lackluster debut soon became a story of the past, as the baby-faced assassin started to steal the show from the next game.

The Warriors star has carried forward that mettle to this day. When his team was tested in the matchup against the Kings, it was the then overlooked teenager who ran a solo riot and led the Warriors to the Conference Semi-Finals.
