“It’s Still Awkward”: Magic Johnson, Who Had a Son with Another Woman, on Why He Told Girlfriend Cookie the Truth

Ervin Magic Johnson and Earlitha ‘Cookie’ Johnson’s union has witnessed its fair share of ups and downs over the years. Despite Johnson’s transgressions in the relationship, Mrs. Johnson has not left his side. However, a few decades ago, their relationship stood on thin ice when Johnson revealed that he has a son with another woman. Therefore, he had to make a bold admission to his wife.

5x NBA champion and Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson recently came out with a mini-documentary series in collaboration with AppleTV+. Like most documentaries, They Call Me Magic covers the life of Johnson, from Michigan State to the NBA and beyond. In episode two, titled Buck, the focus is on his relationship with his wife, Cookie Johnson.

Magic Johnson made a bold declaration to his wife about his son

In the second episode of the documentary, Johnson reflects on his then-new-found rise in popularity. Moreover, he also covers the turbulence in his relationship with his future wife, Cookie Johnson. The main driver of the turbulence was Johnson’s eldest son, Andre. Johnson and his then-girlfriend Melissa Mitchell had Andre when he was 21. However, the two broke off, and Johnson was left to raise Andre by himself.

But things got messy when Johnson and Cookie got back together and tied the knot in 1991. In the documentary, Johnson recalls the uncomfortable conversation the two had regarding Andre. However, Johnson was certain about his son’s fate. He reflected on his bold declaration to Cookie of always being there for his son, regardless of the circumstances.

He said, “That was important, for her to know Andre. You know, it’s always still awkward and tough. And I told her, I said, one thing I’m gonna always do is be in his life and I’m gonna take care of my son.” Despite the ‘awkwardness’ of the situation, Johnson came clean to Cookie Johnson.

Fast forward a few decades, and it seems like Johnson’s gamble to come clean with Mrs. Johnson paid off. The two are still with each other and have two children, EJ Johnson and Elisa Johnson. Moreover, Andre has also done quite well for himself. Andre(40) is a proud husband and a father of two children.

Andre also served as one of the vice presidents of Johnson’s companies from 2012-14. Similarly, he is the vice president of Business Development at a gaming company called Mythical Games. Moreover, he also hosts a podcast dubbed Please Elaborate, where he talks about gaming, sports, entertainment, and more with Mike Dupree.
