Jimmy Butler convinced former All-Star and Miami Heat Veteran Goran Dragic to rejoin the Heat in the most Jimmy Butler way imaginable. Dragic became an unrestricted free agent after Miami’s 4-2 NBA finals loss against the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2020 bubble.

Jimmy Butler is well-known for his almost ‘Jordanesque’ work ethic and sheer dedication to the game. The Miami Heat’s 2020 finals run in the Orlando Bubble surprised many experts.

But that run was crafted on the back of Butler’s hard work and determination to win a championship. After traveling through many teams, from the Bulls to the 76ers, he finally found his right match in Miami.

The intensely competitive atmosphere built by the leadership of Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra suited Butler perfectly. He gave it everything in 2020.

Therefore, the finals loss was obviously a hard pill to swallow. But Butler decided to focus on the future instead of crying over spilled milk.

The Heat’s finals campaign endured significant damage after their two key players Goran Dragic and Bam Adebayo suffered injuries. Butler FaceTimed Dragic to convince him to rejoin the Heat in not the most professional of ways.

He said, ‘You better sign with the Heat. If not, I know where you live. I’m going to hunt you down. And I’m going to beat you up,’” Dragic recounts the conversation with a chuckle.

Therefore, Dragic announced his return to the sunshine state in a 2-year $37.4 million deal in the very first minute of the November free-agency period. The 36-year-old knew Jimmy too well to know he wouldn’t back down.

Butler is locked in once again

The obsessive grit to win at any cost inspired Butler to take Miami to the NBA finals without any big names.

Despite Butler’s gargantuan effort in the finals with 35, 11, and 12 in game 5 and 40, 13, and 11 in game 3, the Heat succumbed to the Lakers 4-2. Crucial injuries and playoff inexperience hurt them badly.

But Butler is not one to sulk and complain about the past. He’s locked in once again.

Butler’s passion for winning was in full display when the 32-year-old yelled, “Tobias Harris over me!”, after knocking out Philadelphia in the second round of the playoffs. The 76ers surely regret trading Butler for Harris now.

In a ‘LeBronesque’ postseason, Butler is averaging 29.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 5.4 assists. The Heat are currently 1-0 up against the Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals. Thanks to Butler’s 41 points with 12-for-19 shooting from the field.
