Luka Doncic is one game away from elimination. The Mavs have fallen into 0-3 hole, despite Luka dropping 40 points in two of those games. And a new narrative has emerged which says Luka Doncic is a great player but does not make his teammates better. However, former NBA player JJ Reddick does not agree with that and has hit back at the narrative.

Luka is the all-time leader in playoff scoring(per game average) but he has just not been able to get the wins required this series. And it’s not like Doncic takes 30 or 40 shots. In the last two games, he took 23 shots to get to 40 points and he has averaged 5.5 assists in the game. He is an exceptional passer, and he has created many scoring opportunities. But his teammates have just not been able to knock down those shots, partly down to the  Warriors playing excellent defense on everyone else. They know they can’t stop Luka so they make sure that they make it as hard as possible for the others. And this has contributed to the narrative that Luka does not make his team better.

JJ Reddick says Luka Doncic is the best shot creator for his teammates

After the game 3 loss, Max Kellerman said that Luka does not make his teammates better like Magic or Bird. Both these players were all-time greats and they won multiple championships. They were also excellent passers of the ball. But they also played with some very good players, according to JJ Reddick.

Reddick says, “Magic & Bird played with Hall of Famers. Luka is playing with 2nd round picks, undrafted guys like DFS. His shot quality created for his teammates – #1 in the last 2 seasons.”

JJ definitely has a point. Magic played with Kareem, Worthy and others while Bird played with Parish, Mchale and co. All these guys are Hall of Famers and legends of the game. In all his four years with the Mavs, Luka has never had another all-star teammate. And he is doing the best with what he’s got. The Mavs need to make sure they surround Luka with quality players so that Luka can lead them to a title in the future.
