The reason why Irving and the Nets parted ways was that they could not come to an agreement for a contract extension. Irving demanded a four-year 198.5 million contract in free agency and the Nets were not willing to pay that much.

Irving had been under a great amount of scrutiny at the start of the season. So, he made sure to make up for lost assets in his new contract. Irving had lost his shoe deal with Nike and had also turned down a contract extension earlier from the Nets.

So, it may have seemed fair to him that he wanted to make up for the lost time.

Will Irving find his way back to his former teammate?

Despite the trade to the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers fans were still convinced that Irving would want to join forces with his former teammate, LeBron James once again. The two did win a championship in Cleveland back in 2016.
