Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki is often considered the greatest foreign player to play in the NBA. Dirk Nowitzki and Dallas Mavericks won their only league title in 2011 when they beat Lebron’s Miami Heat. Odds were stacked against Dallas as they were taking on the big three of Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. Well, quite recently, Dirk was in the news for an altogether different reason.

It has been a rather disappointing season for the Mavericks as they failed to qualify for the playoffs even though they have star players in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. They will be looking forward to restructuring their roster in the off-season in a bid to make it more competitive.

In an interview given to Rachel Nichols of the headliners, Dirk Nowitzki made a bizarre claim. The Dallas Mavericks made an unfortunate exit from the 2007 NBA playoffs in the first round itself. The Tim Duncan-led San Antonio Spurs went on to win the NBA title that season.

On getting asked about the NBA telling him that he might win the MVP award for the 2007 season. He said, ” You know I was embarrassed, I let the city and my team down. And all I wanted to was go somewhere else where nobody knew me or go on a vacation or something. And then sure enough I got a call from the NBA. Hey, you cannot leave yet or not quite yet. There is a chance you might get the MVP. And I remember saying man just give it to somebody else.”

He added, “I was still so embarrassed about it. The situation. So we had to do a press conference and David Stern, commissioner flew in. It was some of the most uncomfortable moments of my career. I got to say standing there putting a suit on and having to talk about what had just happened two weeks earlier. All I wanted to do really was was was be gone. I took it like a man and addressed it right away and how disappointed I still was. And of course, now look(ing) back at MVP trophy it’s amazing.”

Safe to say Dirk was in no mood to be felicitated with any award. Getting knocked out in the first round was insulting enough for him. He just wanted to get away from the world of basketball for some time.

Dirk Nowitzki gets inducted into the Hall Of Fame

Dirk Nowitzki recently got inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame. Alongside Dirk there were Dwyane Wade, Pau Gasol, and Tony Parker, who got their NBA legacies sealed. Having won almost every laurel that there is to win in the NBA, it’s safe to say Dirk Nowitzki deserves the recognition presented to him by the league. He famously defeated the star-studded Miami Heat in the year 2011 even when the odds were stacked against him and won his first and only NBA title.
