A couple of nights ago, Rui Hachimura of the Washington Wizards bagged 30 points against the Orlando Magic. Following his impressive performance, Hachimura spoke to the media about his future with the Wizards. Considering he is in the last year of his rookie deal, his name has been on the trade table. With this in mind, Hachimura said, “I just want to be somewhere that wants me as a basketball player. I want to be somewhere that likes my game.” At this moment, he was unsure of his future. However, now, it’s crystal clear. In the coming weeks, Hachimura is set to join LeBron James and co; and Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson was one of the first to weigh in on this trade.

As the day progressed, reports stated that the Lakers had acquired Rui Hachimura in exchange for Kendrick Nunn and some second-round draft picks. Following this breaking news, Magic Johnson encouraged fans to view this trade as a smart move. He wrote that the youngster’s inclusion would benefit the team on both ends of the court. Further, he added, “He’s averaging 13 points and his length and size will help us on the defensive end!” 

Laker nation unsure about Magic Johnson’s take

Laker nation was left divided by Johnson’s opinion. Some fans found comfort in Johnson’s words as they stated that the NBA legend knew the game well. They thanked him for the positivity and predicted that with this trade, the Lakers could make the playoffs. However, many attacked Johnson for his optimism. They stated that he had been written off long ago and is now trying to be included in any Lakers’ related narrative. These rallied-up fans claimed that Johnson knew nothing about the game. Lakers players on the trade deal

As news of this trade deal made rounds, Lakers manager Rob Pelinka released a statement claiming that the organization was excited about the new addition. He stated that with Hachimura’s inclusion, the team has fulfilled its goal of “adding both size and depth to the wing position”.

Dennis Schroder’s reaction to the trade made it evident that members of the Lakers roster weren’t informed about the trade deal. They found the news out only after ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski tweet

As the news broke, Schroder was live on Twitch. In the viral clip, the Lakers’ star was surprised and shocked by the news. He said, “What trade? Rui? Oh no. Hell no. Rui for Kendrick Nunn? Oh my God. I gotta text Rui. I gotta text Kendrick Nunn.” Further, Schroder found this news to be insane and commented on how the NBA is a business.
