Shaquille O’Neal has bared his soul to the public on several occasions. He has admitted to his mistakes and spoken about the lessons he had learned. On the latest episode of the Big Podcast, the four-time NBA champion opened up about how the concept of humility helped him walk away from one of the darkest periods of his life.

During the episode, co-host Nischelle Turner read a text which detailed the typical traits of a narcissistic person. She and Shaq addressed the current narrative around rapper Kanye West. The opinion of the public is that Kanye West is a narcissist. During this conversation, O’Neal asked Turner the meaning of the word narcissist. Following this, Turner began to narrate her reply to O’Neal.

Shaquille O’Neal on how humility helped him cure his narcissism

Turner described the typical behavior and thoughts of a narcissist. She said, “They exaggerate their achievements and talents.” Instantly O’Neal replied, “that was definitely me.” Following this, each point made by Turner was met with a “yep, that was me” from O’Neal. He confessed to having been a narcissist for a major part of his career.

O’Neal learned that to fix his narcissistic tendency, he had to enable the power of humility. He claimed that his life got better after he humbled himself. He said, “I’ve humbled myself. I don’t look down on people because they’re lesser.”

O’Neal’s advice to Kanye West

O’Neal continued to talk about the debacle surrounding Kanye West. He stated when he heard the word narcissist being used to describe Kanye, the three-times Finals MVP realized the reason why Kanye’s life is falling apart. According to O’Neal, Kanye is going through an experience that he had already triumphed.

The Big Aristotle said, “You can’t be arrogant. When you are arrogant, you lose everything.” He remarked that when this happens, an individual immediately looks to blame an external source. For O’Neal, this is what Kanye is doing.

While claiming that this would be the last time he would talk about Kanye, O’Neal called him a narcissist again. He said, “I was like that, so I can call him that.” He continued to reiterate the importance of being humble. The former Lakers superstar declared that Kanye will always be in trouble until he humbles himself.
