Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a man of many talents and tastes. He was always involved in activism during his time in the league and post-retirement, he addresses societal issues to his huge fan following through his substack. Not only politics and other issues, but Abdul-Jabbar also talks about some of his favorite movies and music from time to time which is taken well by his fans.
Recently, the former NBA champion talked about some of his all-time favorite movies from different genres. Talking about soccer films, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recommended an old war-based film that embodies some of the most important qualities every sportsperson should have.

In the midst of the war, five misfit recruits are given a golden opportunity. They need to play a game of soccer against their South Vietnamese allies and lose the game! In case they win, they would be sent out to battle. On the contrary, they would’ve been excused from the combat if they lost.
As the story progressed, the audience learned of the recruit’s choice and thought process. They would rather tread into the ‘bloody mess’ rather than throw the game away. This moved Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who perfectly summed up the movie in one sentence.

Abdul-Jabbar wrote, “For me, this movie encapsulates the entire idea of what winning means, should mean, and rarely does mean.” Shaolin Soccer was a close runner-up for Abdul-Jabbar but he ended up choosing ‘The Boys in Company C’. He seemed to be pointing to how deep the obsession with winning is in American culture, and perhaps referencing the absurdity of the situation.
The five-time NBA champion also gave some of his other favorites belonging to various genres. From martial arts films, and skiing movies to even ice skating movies, Kareem has it all sorted.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was one of the biggest icons during his time in the NBA. As a result, he met a number of other icons belonging to different fields. One of them happens to be martial arts legend, Bruce Lee.
In the category of Best Martial Arts film, Kareem chose ‘Enter The Dragon’ which has Lee in the leading role. Interestingly, Abdul-Jabbar acted in one of Lee’s movies. Kareem was a part of the ‘Game of Death’ movie. The two icons had a legendary fighting scene in the film and Abdul-Jabbar had practiced with Lee’s wife for his parts.
