NBA superstar LeBron James is definitely one of the best players ever. The four-time champion’s name is always associated with every “GOAT” debate in basketball. James and Michael Jordan are two names that have pretty much monopolized the GOAT debate, bifurcating the NBA community into two sections. Even though James plays in a different era than Jordan, he has always drawn comparisons to the six-time champion ever since his high school days. The Chosen One started dominating the league ever since he was drafted and now tops many mind-boggling records. But is he the greatest player ever? According to this Lakers legend, yes, he is.

Los Angeles Lakers legend Michael Cooper recently revealed his pick for the GOAT debate to be King James. Cooper played only for the Lakers in his 12 years in the league. He helped the Showtime Lakers win five NBA championships with his immense contributions in defense.

Michael Cooper recently made an appearance on the Byron Scott Podcast and talked about a variety of interesting things. During the show, he also talked about LeBron James and his position in the GOAT debate. Cooper stated that James comes to his mind when he thinks about the “GOAT.” He said, “For me, I think LeBron when I talk about a GOAT.”

The 66-year-old noted that James could have played in any decade and be effective and that’s a major reason why, according to him, LeBron qualifies as the “GOAT.” Cooper added, “To me when I look at GOATs, I have a great respect for LeBron, a guy that takes great care of his body.”

He then talked about the four-time MVP’s desire to play with his son Bronny James. The former Lakers guard claimed, “I think you’re going to see him hang around because he wants to be the first player to play with his son.”

However, the 1987 DPOY is not the only person to talk about James’ physical prowess and argue it could have helped him play in any era. The four-time MVP was considered a physical phenom when he first entered the league. His quickness, bounce, and athleticism for someone his size were unbelievable. But as he grew older, he had to change his style of play.

James’ adaptability

Even though James has been showing signs of slowing down, at 37, he is still delivering for the Lakers. This can be attributed to his versatility and ability to adapt. King James doesn’t always go for the slam every time he has an opportunity nowadays. It is almost limited to only breakaway dunks now. He is also attempting more spot-up jumpers.

The Lakers superstar doesn’t attempt his infamous chase-down blocks every time the opponent has a breakaway that often anymore. He rather conserves his energy so that he could be on the floor for an extended period of time to help his team. This might also help him in the long run when Bronny James would be eligible to enter the league in 2024. No father-son duo has played in the NBA so far, so it will be interesting to see whether James and Bronny could achieve it or not.
