The NBA off-season has been full of wild signings and trades. In addition, we also saw some stars sign big extensions. For example, Luka Doncic and Trae Young signed some of the biggest contracts in NBA history. Luka signed a 5-year extension with the Dallas Mavericks.

Doncic (22) is one of the most accomplished players. He almost carried Dallas over the Clippers in their playoff series. The Slovenian star proved he is the real deal as he averaged 35 points per game in the playoffs this season. Hence, he was offered the contract extension.

Luka Doncic signs the biggest rookie extension of all time

On 10th August, the Mavericks announced that Doncic has signed a $207 million supermax rookie contract extension-the largest guaranteed rookie extension in NBA history. Moreover, he is the first person to receive the honors of a rookie supermax.

Entering his 4th year in the league, Doncic was eligible for 25% of the salary cap. However, because of his accolades such as MVP voting and All-NBA selections, he became eligible for a 30%. Now, there were reports he was unhappy with the organization, but this commitment proves otherwise.

Likewise, he was extremely grateful to sign this record-breaking deal. Luka Doncic said: “The game of basketball has given me so much and has taken me to so many amazing places. I am humbled and excited to remain in Dallas as part of the Mavericks.”

He will receive $207 million through the 5 years of his contract. In addition, he has a player option in his last year. This new contract will be in effect from the 2022-23 season as he still has 2 years remaining on his current deal.

Looking at the dominance of Luka Doncic as a Maverick, there is no question that he deserves the extension. At the age of 22, he is regarded as one of the best players in the NBA. He has won the Rookie of the Year award, been selected to the first-team All-NBA for the past 2 seasons. In addition, he is already one of the favorites to win MVP this year.

Doncic almost led Dallas in all the major statistics in the playoffs during the 2020-21 NBA post-season. He is already one of the best international players to play in the NBA. It is great to see that he is following in the footsteps of his mentor, Dirk Nowitzki.
