Entering his 4th year in the league, Doncic was eligible for 25% of the salary cap. However, because of his accolades such as MVP voting and All-NBA selections, he became eligible for a 30%. Now, there were reports he was unhappy with the organization, but this commitment proves otherwise.

Likewise, he was extremely grateful to sign this record-breaking deal. Luka Doncic said: “The game of basketball has given me so much and has taken me to so many amazing places. I am humbled and excited to remain in Dallas as part of the Mavericks.”

He will receive $207 million through the 5 years of his contract. In addition, he has a player option in his last year. This new contract will be in effect from the 2022-23 season as he still has 2 years remaining on his current deal.

Did the ‘Wonderboy’ deserve this contract extension?

Looking at the dominance of Luka Doncic as a Maverick, there is no question that he deserves the extension. At the age of 22, he is regarded as one of the best players in the NBA. He has won the Rookie of the Year award, been selected to the first-team All-NBA for the past 2 seasons. In addition, he is already one of the favorites to win MVP this year.
