Magic Johnson’s sudden decision to retire from the league shocked everyone in the sports world. However, it was only a matter of time before the 12x NBA All-Star gave in to the urge of stepping back onto the court. While Johnson made several attempts to make a comeback and redeem himself on the court, he finally retired from the sport altogether in 2000 after venturing one more season outside the NBA.

Magic Johnson works on a health education campaign

Days after sharing the news of his father’s demise, Magic Johnson made a new announcement on his Instagram handle regarding a ‘possible threat’. As per the social media post, Johnson has teamed up with one of the largest pharmaceutical companies, GSK, to raise awareness against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). In the short clip shared by Magic, he talks about the importance of understanding the virus and the mission he has now taken on.

He says, “I make my health a priority and I’m passionate about inspiring others to do the same. I’ve teamed up with GSK to help bring education and awareness around a common, contagious virus called RSV. Understanding how to help protect yourself against this virus is important, especially for older adults who are at an increased risk for severe infection. My mission in life is to empower older adults to be their own health advocate by putting their health first.”

The Lakers legend has been a health advocate for the past three decades after he was diagnosed with HIV. Johnson got the news before the 1991-92 season when the results of his physical test came out. This gravely affected Johnson, who then decided to immediately retire from the league. In his retirement speech, he stated that he would be dedicating his life to tackling the disease.
