The superstar shooting guard has a player option worth $46.9 million to opt in for this season. It is increasingly looking like he will opt-in. Not only this will provide the 76ers Harden’s services for another year, but they will also then have a chance to sign a long-term deal with him.

According to recent reports, 76ers GM Daryl Morey would look to sign Harden to a three-year extension with the sixers. The 76ers need to lock up Harden for the near future because of the assets they spent on acquiring him. Having someone like Harden to pair with back-to-back MVP runner-up, Joel Embiid gives the Sixers a championship core to work around.

James Harden struggled in the playoffs for the Sixers

The Sixers entered 2021-22 cautiously optimistic about the season. After blowing multiple double-digit leads against the Atlanta Hawks in the 2021 NBA Playoffs and alienating Ben Simmons in the process, things were not normal in Philadelphia. But Joel Embiid took another step in his game and kept the 76ers near the top of the standings. Ben Simmons, who didn’t play a single game for the Sixers, would be eventually traded in a blockbuster deadline day trade with Brooklyn Nets for James Harden.

Harden will be 33 in August and Embiid turned 28 in March. The Sixers have a limited window to maximize their chances of a championship with Embiid. They will need to look into Harden’s recent injury struggles when giving him a max contract. They still have Tobias Harris and his two years remaining of a massive contract. The management would also need to budget for Tyrese Maxey’s rapid growth and his possible max-extension coming up next season.
