Michael Jordan accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November 2016 at the White House. He was joined by fellow NBA legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Vin Scully and several other American icons. The medal is considered the greatest civilian distinction that the United States can give to its people.

The legend deserved it as much as anyone for his unparalleled contribution to not only basketball but to sports in general. Jordan is also a growing charitable donor and has been increasingly involved in social welfare.

Obama made many jokes throughout the ceremony, including referring to Jordan as “the guy from ‘Space Jam.’“?Despite being the President, spoke about Jordan like a true basketball fan.

“He (Jordan) is more than just the best player on the two greatest teams of all-time: The Dream Team and the 1996 Chicago Bulls. He is more than just a logo, more than just an internet meme. He’s more than just a charitable donor or a business owner committed to diversity. There is a reason you call someone the Michael Jordan of (something)? They know what you?re talking about because Michael Jordan is the Michael Jordan of greatness. He is the definition of somebody so good at what they do that everybody recognizes it. That?s pretty rare.?
