Taking care of one’s mental health has only recently gained the limelight. Athletes such as Naomi Osaka have withdrawn to heal themselves. But this issue has been a long going on. Notably, even Michael Jordan had his struggles with mental health.
His Airness was on a rise to be the biggest icon in the world. Jordan and the Bulls were racing to championships like it was a habit. They completed their first three-peat, and they weren’t slowing down. However, a bombshell dropped on the entire league. Mike announced his first retirement in 1993.

There was no clear sign pointing toward his mental health. However, Jordan’s words before his retirement did strike the matter.

Michael Jordan battles mental health
Jordan was at the peak of his powers in 1993. The six-time champion had completed his first three-peat with the Bulls and won as many Finals MVPs. Chicago was enjoying having Jordan around.
However, what they didn’t know were the struggles he went through. Before his shocking retirement in October, His Airness spoke about having nightmares. He saw himself lose everything, and this sent chills down his entire body.

Jordan said: “I’m an alcoholic in the dream, and because of it, all the things I’ve worked so hard for will be taken away. I wake up numb after those dreams. Those are the kind of dreams when you want to make yourself wake up, because they trouble you so badly.”

“In the dreams, I’m making bad mistakes, and I’m not perfect, but I don’t know what to do about it because I might lose everything.”
Despite being at the height of his powers, Jordan had to take a step back. While fame and money come, it is never easy to be in the constant limelight of the people. Jordan couldn’t get any time to himself. Media and fans would swarm him the moment he stepped out. The mental pressure is immense with every move of MJ being monitored.

From the outside, the luxury lifestyle makes it look attractive. However, the real truth is being an athlete is a tough job. And MJ surely felt the effects of it. However, today the times are different.
