Michael Jordan Sounds Off on Intense Fight With Magic Johnson That Was Stopped by Larry Bird

The Dream Team is considered to be the greatest team ever assembled. The team had 11 Hall of Famers and was coached by a legendary coach in Chuck Daly. But having such huge superstars on the team is bound to bring up some tension between the stars. And of those 11 stars, Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson were the biggest on the team.

Johnson was the face of the NBA in the 80s and Jordan was on the way to become the face of it. But Magic wasn’t ready to give up his throne, even though Jordan was the better player and on his way up. And this caused a rift between the two players, which later turned into an argument at the Olympics.

Larry Bird broke up a fight between Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson

Clyde Drexler recalls an argument that broke out between Magic and Jordan. He says that Jordan came and told him the story. Drexler says, “Then, we started talking about how we won back to back, and it’s in the ’90s, and you know, Magic wouldn’t let it go. He wouldn’t let it go. ‘We got five championships. Me and Bird, we were the ’80s. Blah blah blah.

“These are the ’90s. There’s a new kid on the block. Magic wouldn’t let it go, and Bird looked at him and said, ‘Magic, we are … our time is over and done with. We got to just step aside and let them take over.’ It took a while for Magic to let that go, and we argued and argued until about 1, 2 o’clock in the morning.’’

Bird had realised that Jordan’s time had come, and it was time for him and Magic to step aside. It was hard for Magic to let it go, but he did eventually. Jordan said that this argument brought the two legends closer, and they became very good friends. The Dream Team changed the landscape of basketball and it pushed the game 20 years ahead. And it was possible because the legends of the game decided to put their differences aside and play for their country.
