Sports, politics, and activism have all played a huge role in shaping society. Back in the 1990s, the Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan were one of the biggest sports teams in the world and their influence was immense. From young kids picking up basketballs to the rise in sneaker culture, the Bulls and Jordan, in particular, have somehow played a role. When the team visited Atlanta once, some of the players had the chance to meet a very influential figure from the world of politics and activism. 

Bill Cartwright and Craig Hodges had the privilege of meeting, Mrs. Coretta King. In case you are wondering, she is the wife of the great Martin Luther King Jr. Despite being huge stars themselves, the Bulls’ players got very nervous while meeting Mrs. King.

Jordan’s teammates couldn’t keep their cool while meeting Mrs. King

There have been few personalities in the history of the United States and America and the world who were as influential as Martin Luther King Jr. He led the civil rights movement in the country from the 1950s till his tragic assassination in 1968. King Jr.’s leadership was essential in the formation of some important laws which uplifted the minorities in the country.

Former New York Knicks star and the Bulls’ center during that time, Bill Cartwright was face to face with Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife. Craig Hodges also tagged along in this special program organized by the TNT cable network.

Following their meeting, Cartwright detailed how nervous he was in front of Mrs. King in the ‘Jordan Rules’ book. He said, “The first time I’ve been nervous like that meeting someone.”

Mrs. King and the two basketball stars talked about issues concerning the country like the state of Black America and the war. Moreover, there was also some debate on the government’s actions on January 15, which happens to be Martin Luther King Day.

Cartwright once stood up to Michael Jordan in practice

Charles Oakley was more than just a teammate for Michael Jordan. During his time with the Chicago Bulls, he formed a great relationship with MJ. 

Oakley joined the New York Knicks during the 1988-89 season and Bill Cartwright was sent to the Bulls as a part of the trade. This naturally made Jordan very negative towards Cartwright.

Cartwright had enough of Michael Jordan’s antics one day. He retaliated and said, “Look, if you do anything like that again, you will never play basketball. Because I’m gonna break both your legs.”Despite their relationship, the two went on to win three NBA titles together.
