Committing to Memphis, the basketball realm had a singular expectation, for Bates to be the next NBA superstar. Shockingly, Bates would soon fall out of the Memphis lineup, and his talent lost all relevancy.

In his second year, he entered the transfer portal. The celebrated high school star ignored all the big offers and chose a team that was close to home, Eastern Michigan. His journey is one that even caught the attention of Kevin Durant. The Suns guard admired Bates for taking the unconventional route.

The Eagles were coming off a 10-21 season and they were widely considered to be one of the worst teams in college basketball. Emoni Bates’ arrival didn’t transform Eastern Michigan either. However, it became the place where his stock would once again reach the heights of his earlier years.

Leading from the front, he scored 30 points in his very first game as an Eagle. But that’s far from his best performance. His greatest Eagles performance came when he exploded for 43 points. Bates would go on a rampage that day scoring 29 straight points. It shook up the basketball world even drawing reactions from LeBron James.
