Being a celebrity is difficult. It puts a lot of pressure on the person and certain expectations are built. However, being a child of a celebrity is even more pressurizing. That’s what the children of Michael Jordan have had to go through their entire lives. Living up to the name of their fathers is an unwanted expectation people usually have of celebrity children.

While a few have lived up to the unnecessary expectations, most have failed to do so. The burden of being a superstar’s son/daughter is too much to bear for a child growing up. MJ’s daughter, Jasmine certainly felt the pressure of following in the footsteps of her legendary father. However, she has been able to overcome all that to build an identity for herself.

Jasmine is a sports marketing field representative with the Jordan brand and Nike. She knows how hard she has worked and doesn’t heed criticism from strangers. She said, “When people say that I’m only me because of who my father is, I laugh naturally. There’s not one person that has encountered or worked with me that would agree to that statement.”

“My work ethic really speaks for itself“, Jasmine expressed. She continued,  “I’m going to make sure that when I enter a room, you hear Jasmine before you hear Michael Jordan‘s daughter.”

The pressure of being the daughter of Michael Jordan will never go away

While she felt the pressure of being a child of someone successful won’t go away, Jasmine was ready to pave her own way. She said, “I think the stigma that is applied to children with successful parents is definitely one that is unavoidable.”

She continued, “At the end of the day, it’s up to us to really pave our own way and path and understand that no matter what the expectation is, the pressure doesn’t go away.”
