Over the years, the game of basketball has evolved to a whole new level. Nowadays, teams are looking for players that can display their versatility with their game.

However, back in the 80s, when NBA legends such as Isiah Thomas and Magic Johnson used to play. Many believed in the 5 traditional positions.

In fact, people believed that NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas was not a “pure” point guard. Thomas tweeted about this, being quite vocal. “Not “Pure” I was in search of the sublime at that time in the history of our #nba game.”

Thomas was truly a delight to watch back in the day. He used to go deep in his bag to pull off fancy moves from time to time. One can even say that Thomas was way ahead of his time.

Isiah Thomas reacts to basketball specialist Rashad Phillips’ updated position list

NBA/NCAA prospect specialist Rashad Phillips recently released a list of basketball positions in his definition. He is of the opinion that the game has developed to a stage that the traditional 5 positions are becoming outdated now.

2-time NBA champion Isiah Thomas was quick to support Phillips regarding the list. Thomas handed an example of his own career to make his point while subtly taking a dig at his critics.

“My critics said I wasn’t a “Pure” point guard and my style of play at that time was beyond their definition of description @RP3natural the word “Pure” is a very loaded word which I rejected with my voice and style of play. Let it be known!”

Like Isiah Thomas said, he was never a traditional point guard. In fact, he was, as Phillips has described, a hybrid guard. Someone who can do much more than just facilitate the ball for their team.

Talking about the league today, someone like LeBron James comes to mind when we talk about versatility. James can do anything and everything for his team. He can score, defend, and even facilitate at an elite level.
