Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks made a big jump in the postseason last season. With Luka Doncic spearheading the forces, they reached all the way to the Western Conference Finals. The Slovenian wonderboy was the main show. However, right behind him was Jalen Brunson. After his breakthrough season, he got the deal of his life with the New York Knicks. However, they may be in trouble as the NBA opened investigations over the trade.

Brunson was one of the biggest eruptions in Dallas this season. The Mavs guard had his best season averaging 16.3 points and 4.8 assists. However, his real impact came during the playoffs. In their first-round matchup, horror loomed over Dallas when Luka was dealing with an injury. In desperate times, Brunson pulled through. The 25-year-old averaged 27.8 points and 4.2 assists in the first round against Donovan Mitchell.

New York Knicks fall under the hammer

After a dream playoff run, Brunson was bound to get a huge deal. And the Knicks were knocking on his door ever since. After being linked with them right until the offseason, the time finally came when the New York Knicks signed the young star to a huge $104 million deal for 4 years. However, it all happened seconds after the free agency window opened up, which aroused suspicions. Subsequently, the NBA has now got on their case.

According to the CBA rules, teams can’t contact any player or agent until free agency opens up. However, with the speed of this deal, the Knicks may have made it too obvious. Hence, the league is now investigating the matter. However, they aren’t the only team who could face the repercussions.

The NBA has grown very strict with its tampering policies in recent years. An increased fine of up to $10million is only the start of the punishment. Before this, the Bulls and Miami Heat both had to forfeit picks for the signings of Lonzo Ball and Kyle Lowry, respectively. Now, even the Sixers are under fire. Their trio signings of James Harden, Tucker, and Danuel House Jr. are all under investigation as well. While the punishments are heavy, the Knicks are already a side riding on their youth. Hence, sacrificing a few picks won’t trouble them much. On the other hand, Brunson has the opportunity of a lifetime as he goes in to lead a big market franchise at just 25.
