According to recent updates, Griner’s time in prison can be very difficult because of a rule. Officials observe whether an inmate is a ‘regime violator’ or not and this determines the course of action regarding the inmate’s sentence.

Brittney Griner will be assessed in the initial weeks of her adapting period

Earlier this month, an update about Brittney Griner sent shockwaves across the world. After concealing her location for a few days, officials finally confirmed her location, the IK-2 penal colony.

Infamous for its working conditions and administration, Griner will spend nine years in the prison unless US officials can negotiate a deal to bring her home.

The initial adaptation period in the prison is known as quarantine. The administration observes the prisoners during this period. According to penal colony researcher Judith Pallot, this phase is important as it determines how the prisoner will serve her sentence.

Pallot said, “Quarantine is also a time when, for certain Russian prisoners, the prison administration begins to take a view on whether the prisoner is going to be a ‘regime violator’ as they call it or somebody who is going to behave well.”

These observations determine a lot of things, like which facility the inmate will end up in. Considering a lot of factors, officials might tag Griner as a ‘regime violator’.

Regime violators are under 24-hour surveillance while the other inmates enjoy a considerable amount of advantages over them. They have the right to receive additional parcels and extended visits.

Griner’s only hope remains a prisoner swap deal

A prisoner swap deal involving Griner has been in the news for the past few months. Officials from both countries have held talks about a possible swap deal. Viktor Bout, infamous for his activities surrounding smuggling arms, will be sent back to Russia in exchange for Griner in case of a deal.
