NFL Legend Explains Why He Admires Michael Jordan’s Former Coach Phil Jackson

When someone looks at the 90s and the 2000s, there are two teams which stand out: 6-time champion Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, and 3-time champion Los Angeles Lakers, led by the duo of Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

The common factor in both the teams was legendary coach Phil Jackson. With his unique persona and his coaching style, Jackson is admired by multiple coaches and fans alike.

Baltimore Ravens Executive Vice President and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome recently appeared at Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay. There, he opened up about why he respects Jackson so much.

“He managed some of the greatest players to play in the NBA. He meant he molded those guys into a team. And he made winning the most important thing, right? That’s why I admire him, you know, and he did it in two different places.

“He made winning Okay, yeah, we got Mike, and we got Scotty. And you know, when we got Shaq and Kobe in the mix, he got those guys that say the most important thing is when you know we need to win. So that’s why my mini going does it again with the Lakes. So I admire his ability to mold young men into a team and have one goal and that’s winning.”

The revolutionary coach certainly left his mark as the best coach NBA has ever seen, with eleven titles in the 20 seasons he worked as a coach.

When the Bulls announced Phil Jackson as their head coach in 1989, not many people in the team were fans of the decision. MJ especially was disappointed with the hire as he was replacing Doug Collins in the first place.

A year later, Michael Jordan and the Bulls won their first championship. Jackson’s revolutionary triangle offense worked perfectly with the side, and the team looked unstoppable.

Jordan and Co. led by Phil Jackson, after their fifth championship, hit a pretty tough spot at the end of 1997. Executive Jerry Krause, who had formed this super team, shared a rocky relationship with coach Jackson.

After the 97 finals, the veteran coach made a public comment that the Bulls had different plans and wanted to hire some other coach after 1998. Despite Jordan & Co. threatening to leave with Jackson’s departure, Krause was adamant about his decision.

After winning their sixth championship in eight years, Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan left the Bulls, and Krause, who had built this super team, could never repeat his magic with the team.
