LeBron James and Dwyane Wade formed one of the most iconic duos in NBA history. On-court exploits of the two have been immortalized in Miami folklore. The pairing of these two superstars was at the heart of the Miami Heat‘s back-to-back championship wins in 2012 and 2013. Wade and James once went to battle as teammates long before their Miami stint. Then, however, the iconic duo did not taste victory. Rather, they were outsmarted by an NBA veteran.

Both LeBron James and Dwyane Wade started their NBA career in 2003, starting strongly. By 2004, James and Wade made it to the United States Men’s Olympic basketball team. There, LeBron and D Wade were smoked by a former Wizards star during a scrimmage.

NBA veteran outsmarts LeBron James and Dwyane Wade

During a 2004 Olympics practice game, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade locked horns with the NBA veteran Gilbert Arenas. LeBron and D Wade were part of a star-studded lineup that included Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, among others. Arenas, on the other hand, was forced to lead a side that lacked star power. However, Arenas and Co. held their ground against the bunch of young talent.

In his recent appearance on?The Old Man and the Three?podcast, Gilbert Arenas recalled the iconic scrimmage from the 2004 Olympics camp.?“Brad Miller, of course, Antoine Jameson and Kirk Hendrick give me the ball the whole time. Let me just destroy them since I was faster. So we are beating there. We are beating that squad. We are beating the blue squad. So we are sitting there and celebrating,” said Gilbert Arenas.

Though Gilbert Arenas ran a riot against LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, he failed to make it to the Olympics squad.

Gilbert Arenas left without making it to the squad

Having outplayed a bunch of young talent, Gilbert Arenas was then sure that he will make it to the main squad. However, things didn’t go as Arenas expected. The 3x-NBA All-Star had tweaked his groin. Apparently, he rushed to the coach to convey the message. “I don’t want to hold up a spot for someone else trying to make this team. So I am thinking I am already guaranteed. So I am being polite you know, I don’t wanna hurt someone who is trying to make this team. And he said, “Oh no you don’t worry about it, you are on the bubble”,” Gilbert Arenas said.

Gilbert Arenas couldn’t fathom his coach’s words as he wondered who else was in the bubble. Eventually, the Washington Wizards veteran had to come home without making it to the men’s team. The Olympic team, on the other hand, failed to seize the gold medal and had to settle for a bronze.
